The South African home education sector has traversed many mountains in the last 20 years, and those of us who have seen the developments up close and personal, will know that while appearances shifted, the core realities have persisted. We had hoped to make a greater impact on the recent passing of legislation that regulates home education, given our intense efforts for over a decade. The surface-level changes have not translated into the deep-seated transformation we hoped and asked for and the underlying nature of some of the fundamental aspects of our legal and social status as home educating parents has remained a constant.

This is not to say that all hope is lost because we now have section 51 cast in stone for the next while. What we do have is a greater understanding of the political process (or at least how it should progress) and a renewed resolve to make sense of what is expected of parents and their children, and to share our knowledge and experience with you. Some of us have over 30 years in the trenches, others only 3 or 10. Together, we have well over 100 years of deep learning through personal application, professional experience in education, and our inexhaustible drive to improve the state of education for our sector, as well as for our country. Ours is an effort of genuine love to improve the learning environment of our own children and grandchildren, as well as yours.

We welcome you to subscribe and follow our updates, and connect with us to become more involved in growing our centralised platform that aims to be an oasis in what has become a desert in the education sector of South Africa.

– HSSA ADMIN TEAM

Whether you are a traditional stay at home parent who does it all from scratch, or you can only fit in 3 hours of home education in the evenings, your input is welcome, and needed. We hope to build a space that caters for all shapes and sizes that comprises alternative education in South Africa, even though we started out as ‘purist’ homeschoolers back in 2008.

We want to see YOUR blogs and YOUR podcasts and YOUR products and YOUR services featured here alongside ours as we take on the next 20 years together to rebuild, resuscitate and recoup what used to be enjoyment and excellence in educating our little ones into adulthood. Join us to make our collective dream come true!

Yours in Homeschooling, Rebekka@hssa.co.za
